Ode to Childhood

I can still smell Mom’s homemade spaghetti.

She yells upstairs to let us know that dinner is ready.

My Dad is to my left, my little brother to my right, and my mom and older brother across from me as we eat dinner together.

We talk about our days as we dig into our food.

Dad had a nice day at work, we had a boring day at school.

I snuggle up next to Mom while we watch a movie before bed.

She scratches my back lightly because she knows it’s my favorite.

Her and Dad tuck me in and we say our nightly prayer.

Mom tells me that she’ll wake me up in the morning.

I smell Leo’s litter box because I haven’t scooped it for a couple of days.

He meows to tell me that it’s time for him to eat.

I can see the city outside of my window as I get ready for my day.

I talk to Leo while we both eat breakfast.

We barely slept last night because we’re both feeling restless lately.

I go to work and come home in the afternoon.

I call Mom and Dad to tell them that I miss them, again.

I tuck Leo in with me once we’re both ready for bed.

I set two alarms for the morning, just to make sure I get up on time.
